Four steps. The third one is the long one.

  1. Run the launcher and pick a folder

    Install somewhere you own — D:\Games\AOR is a good habit. Avoid Program Files and avoid OneDrive folders; both will fight the patcher over file locks.

  2. Let it install the prerequisites

    The launcher installs DirectX 9 runtime and the Visual C++ 2019 x86 redistributable silently if they are missing. Both are Microsoft packages; the launcher does not bundle anything else.

  3. Download and verify — about 35 minutes on 100 Mbit

    Files arrive in chunks and each one is checked against a SHA-256 manifest before it counts. Close the launcher whenever you like. Reopen it and it picks up mid-chunk.

    Progress and errors are written to AOR\logs\patcher.log — attach it to any bug report.

  4. Log in with your account name

    Your account name, not your character name, and not your email. Create characters at the realm select screen. If the client closes instantly on launch, read Common failures below.

III · Requirements

What it runs on

The engine is from 2009 and it shows — in your favour. A laptop from 2015 will hold 60 fps on the ground. Flight is the expensive part, because you can see everything at once.

Linux and Steam Deck. The client runs under Proton 8.0+ with d3d9 from DXVK. The launcher itself does not — download the torrent, extract it, and point Proton at Client.exe. Patching is manual until we ship a native launcher.

IV · Failures

Common failures

In rough order of how often we see them.

The client opens and closes instantly
Almost always the Visual C++ 2019 x86 redistributable. The x64 one does not count — this client is 32-bit. Install vc_redist.x86.exe from Microsoft and try again. If it still closes, send us AOR\logs\client.log.
The launcher stalls at the same percentage every time
A chunk is failing verification and being re-fetched forever. Delete AOR\patch\cache and restart the launcher. If it stalls at the same place again, your antivirus is holding a lock on the folder — add an exclusion for the install directory.
Windows SmartScreen says the publisher is unknown
Our code-signing certificate is not yet trusted by SmartScreen's reputation system, which needs volume we do not have. Verify the SHA-256 above before you run it, then choose More info → Run anyway. We would rather you check the hash than trust a button.
Extraction of the manual parts fails
You are missing a part, or one is truncated. Every volume must be in the same folder with its original name, and you extract .7z.001 — not any of the others. Check each file's size against the part index before extracting.
Login says my details are wrong and I know they are not
Log in with your account name, not your email and not your character name. Account names are case-sensitive. If you are certain, reset from Support.
Flight does nothing when I press Numpad 1
Flight unlocks at level 15, after the Hollow Vault chain. Before that the key is inert. After that, check Num Lock — the client reads the numpad, and laptops without one need a rebind in Settings → Controls.
